Tedeschi Trucks Band Treat NJPAC to Array of Euphonious Covers Leftover Salmon Announce New Reflective LP ‘Grass Roots’ with Billy Strings, Oliver Wood and More But in the right ears and in the right environment, it’s a sonic adventure worth taking. It ultimately explodes into a bit of kaleidoscopic, Velvet Underground-inspired drone-rock before dissolving into a sonic reprise of “Dampness’” opening theme and galloping off on a garage-band, guitar-and-percussion-driven coda.ĭeep Fried Grandeur is not for everyone. “Shrinks” is its counterpart’s opposite, looking toward the East in an amplified nod to Ravi Shankar with George Harrison’s western adaptations woven throughout. “Dampness” is one of two 18-minute tracks – “Shrinks the Day” is the other – that make up Deep Fried Grandeur, the new joint between Chicago-based American guitarist Ryley Walker and the Japanese psychedelic outfit known as Kikagaku Moyo.ĭead and Zep comparisons notwithstanding, it’s impossible to know where Ryley and the band come together – or, indeed, break apart – as this instrumental LP finds them fully integrated in a batch of sometimes-formless psychedelic soup that entertains in spite of itself. It is this mix that keeps The Sino Hearts fresh and Rock n Roll Hurricane is the perfect record for your introduction.Eleven minutes in, “Pour Dampness Down in the Stream” blossoms into a percussive jam not unlike the Grateful Dead coming out of “Space” into “The Other One” or Led Zeppelin crashing into “In the Evening.” The Sino Hearts keep it real and within their songs you can also hear the inspiration from first gen punk kings like the Ramones or Buzzcocks. The band has high energy and plays a catchy but simple punk rock that is quickly addicting and especially so if you were ever into any band on the Lookout! Records roster. Rock n Roll Hurricane is their latest release on Otitis Media and it is a compilation of their best tracks from their last two studio records. The Sino Hearts are a solid 70s punk influenced power pop band based in Beijing, China. Overall, Nightshift could have a sleeper record here that might really build momentum after everyone has a chance to let it sink in completely.Īrtists With Similar Fire: Sonic Youth / The Raincoats / Yo La Tengo Zöe by Nightshift Most of this environment is driven from the vocals of Eothen Stearn which has a very Kim Gordon vibe to them with a few more soft accents around her singing. The record initially sounds like it is in the corner by itself but then opens up with creative chord changes and a fresh vision within every track.

Their new album, Zöe, is out February 22nd via Trouble In Mind Records and actually feels like the perfect album for this time of mostly isolation for all of us. The band takes very subtle tempos and vocals and then in an instant will swirl the sounds in your head. There is something about the deconstructed post-punk from Nightshift that is absolutely hard to turn away from. Mountain / Sundays & Cybele Deep Fried Grandeur by Ryley Walker And Kikagaku Moyo Not sure that will happen but one thing is for sure – you need this record in your collection!Īrtists With Similar Fire: Population II / Mt. If Walker could snag Moyo for his next album Deep Fried Grandeur is the proof for how great it could be. Ryley easily fits right in and the pair sound like they have been playing together for years. Both tracks follow Kikagaku Moyo’s output as they swirl and sway while climbing to a monumental closing. The music sounds absolutely fantastic as the final product here is one of cleanest mixes from a live set I have heard. Deep Fried Grandeur is the album and it is officially out today and available for Bandcamp Friday.
